#GETHELOOK – HALLOWEEN’17

I have to admit I’m rubbish with Halloween, I hate the site of blood to the point where all the fake gory looks freak me out. I could never dress up scary. I think when I was younger I was a witch every year, and then year before last I was a cat… original. You get my vibe though, I don’t do ‘proper’ Halloween. This year I went for a mermaid vibe, my actual outfit was half hearted I just really wanted my makeup to stand out. It was quite tedious to do, I practised 3 times during the week and spent about 2-3 hours getting ready. I really took my time because I didn’t want to rush and mess up.

PREP

As I was putting so much eyeshadow/glitter glue/glitter on my face it was key that I prepped my skin, whenever I’m going out I use this mask from Selfridges. Honestly it’s amazing. For me it tightens my pores, soothes and brightens my skin, and for some reason when I have a photo taken with flash my skin looks SO flawless like it’s been FaceTuned. I left this on for about 30 minutes whilst I did my hair, then let the residue soak into my skin for 10 minutes before washing my face with water and patting it dry.

HAIR

I did 2 braids at the top of my head and secured them with mini clear hair ties. I used a selection of glitter in the middle and either side of the braids. For this is recommend thick glitter like Gypsy Shrine otherwise thin glitter looks a bit like dandruff. Just spray some hair spray onto the area, add the glitter then spray some more to secure it. To curl my hair I used a bubble barrel ended curling tong, mine is a Mark Hill one from Boots from about 5 years ago but the updated Pick n Mix one is here. This type of barrel is perfect because no 2 curls are the same, I took small sections of my hair about 5cm-10cm wide and wrapped them round the barrel for 10 seconds and made my way around my head. Once done I sprayed my hair with hair spray and let the style sit for about an hour before running my fingers through my hair to create loose waves.

EYES

I started with my eyes first, I always do eye makeup first because if you get any fall out from shadow you can just wipe it away, plus as I was using such bright colours it would of been a hot mess if I did foundation first.  I started by priming my eyes with Urban Decay eyeshadow primer, this stuff keeps everything in place I can’t live without it. For eyshadow I used a mix of the Jaclyn Hill x Morphe palette and the NYX Multi Finish Eye Palette in Electric. I started by using a nude transition shade under the brow/on the crease and then started lightly and built up with the pink from the NYX palette. Then with a slightly smaller brush than before, I used the purple from Jaclyn’s palette and did the same but slightly below where I had placed the pink. Continuing with the purple using a smaller brush I applied more shadow in the inner corner and outer corner to create the halo eye effect. In the centre of the lid I placed some eyeshadow primer to act as a base and applied the turquoise shade from Jaclyns palette on top. Then do make that pop some more I used this NYX glitter on top. To keep glitter on the eye I use eyelash glue, any brand will do! I applied Pinky Goat lashes right at the end of the whole look. Under the eye I took the pink and smoked it under the eye and then used the purple on top. For inner corner and brow bone highlight I used this beaut holographic eyeshadow from Topshop which looks white but catches a purple/blue undertone in the light.

FACE

I primed using Too Faced Hangover Primer and as always used my NYX Dark Circle concealer in shade Medium to colour correct my under eye dark circles. For foundation I used the L’Oreal Pro Glow foundation which I bought in America but you can’t get it in the UK??!!! I am so mad about this because it’s THE perfect foundation, so if anyone is going to America anytime soon can you bring me back about 5 of these?? Thanks. Concealer as always is my trusty Maybelline Fit Me and I ever so slightly did some contour to bronze up my face a bit using the Tartiest Pro Glow palette. As I was going to apply so many bright colours to my face I didn’t want bronzer/contour to make the shades ashy. I set my face and under eyes with the Laura Mercier setting powder and then with the NYX Matte setting spray.

THE MERMAID SCALES

The big question is…. how on earth did I get the scales?! It’s so mad, I simply just put a pair of fishnet tights over my head and packed the eyeshadow on top, as you do. I used micro fishnets as they’re the perfect size to create the scale effect, anything larger would of been way too big. Using the same shades that I used for my eyes, I used sponge wedges to pat the eyeshadow onto my face starting with the purple. I wanted a purple & turquoise on the cheeks which blended into pink and purple on the temples/forehead. Dabbing some Barry M Glitter Gel on to the areas where I wanted glitter applied, I sprinkled a mix of Barry M glitter and NYX glitter over those areas. Trust this is messy, you’re gonna need a dustpan and brush.

Then to finish off I used my fave Maybelline Brow Drama eyebrow gel to shape my brows and on the lips MAC Lip Liner in Edge to Edge and lipstick in Saint Germain.

#GETTHELOOK – HOW I EDIT MY INSTAGRAM PHOTOS

I always get asked what filters I use for my Insta photos, I honestly have quite a long process as I edit everything on separate apps, I never use actual Instagram filters. I thought I’d share my editing process, this may produce a few eye rolls but I like my profile to have a bit of an aesthetic to it and I need something to do on the tube to and from work!

LIGHTING

Usually I literally take about 80 photos before I’ve settled on one I like, I am such a perfectionist. Honestly, it’s all down to lighting. You can not take a good photo in bad lighting. The worst type of lighting is light that comes from above, this is why we all look horrendous in Topshop changing rooms. Light that comes above creates shadows on your face, not cute for those eye bags! The best lighting is light that comes directly at you, which is why the new H&M changing rooms are the best for selfies. Personally, the best lighting is natural lighting which is why I usually take all of my selfies in front of a window.

FLAT LAYS

Flat lays are the trickiest photos to take, I think you’ve got to have a really good eye for composition and angles. They’re always best taken from birds eye view but getting that spot on is quite hard. All my flat lays are taken in square mode, it helps with the composition. If you add a grid onto your camera/cropping mode where the 4 lines cross each other, they should sit on key areas of your photo. The human eye is naturally drawn to those 4 areas so this will create focal points for your photo. You can also use those lines a guide to lay out your props.

HOW I EDIT

I use 2 apps to edit my photos, FaceTune and VSCO Cam. FaceTune you usually have to pay for but I’ve got a free version from the app store, VSCO is also free but you can buy extra filters. They do offers all the time so you can build up a collection easily, the only filter I use is HB1 from the HYPEBEAST pack.

IMG_0195

Firstly, I go into FaceTune and whiten the whole background on my image, this just makes it look better with the filter. Then I use the Glow feature to go over my outfit/key parts of the image, it just enhances the colours in the image and makes it look a bit more high res.

Then I load the photo into VSCO and add my filter, I never have the full filter on the image, usually on a 6 or a 9. Then I sharpen the image to a 3. If needed, i’ll adjust the exposure but only to a 1.

Then FINALLY it’s ready for the gram! Yep, it’s a longer process than most people but it literally takes me 2 minutes to do I’ve done it so many times. Other good apps to edit photos on are Afterlight, Square Ready and Snapseed.

#GETTHELOOK – CHILL BEAT

One of my fave YouTuber’s, Holly Boon, invented this whole ‘Chill Beat’ situation. Essentially its just when your face is glam AF (beat) and your outfit is chill, i.e. a tracksuit.

I sat down to do my makeup yesterday and just felt like using products which I hadn’t used in a while, or never before, and actually fell back in love with some products!

IMG_6380.JPG

Face:

Too Faced Hangover X Primer, Too Faced Born This Way foundation in natural beige, Maybeline Fit Me concealer shade 10, Laura Mercier translucent powder for under the eye, MAC Mineralize Skin Finish in medium for the face, Bourjois Chocolate Bronzer, Benefit Hoola Bronzer to contour, Bobbi Brown blush in Coral Sugar, Makeup Revolution pink highlight from the Highlight Palette.

Eyes:

Huda Beauty Textured Shadows Palette, shades ‘flamingo and ‘pink’ on the eye. Shade ‘smarty pants’ from Tarte In Bloom palette used as transition shade, shade ‘leader’ used in the outer corner to darken, finally shade ‘funny girl’ in the inner corner. Maybeline Brow Drama for the brows.

Lips:

NYX lipliner in shade ‘London‘ and KKW X Kylie Cosmetics Kimberley liquid lipstick.

Tracksuit is Pretty Little Thing.

So my overall verdict and some standouts are, Too Faced foundation has always been a fave of mine, the coverage is so buildable and never looked cakey on the face, it really gives off such a airbrushed finish. The Boujous bronzer I hadn’t used in about a year! Very warm toned and similar to MAC Give Me Sun, plus is smells of chocolate. The Huda Beauty palette I’m still very ‘hmmmm’ about, you can read my review here, however I must admit that the pink shades are crazy pigmented! The NYX lipliner and Kylie Cosmetics combo is my favourite nude lip situation at the minute, full KKW X Kylie Cosmetics review to come soon! The Makeup Revolution highlight is POPPIN, I can’t even remember how much this palette was but I’m pretty sure it was under £10 from Superdrug, it’s so smooth and glowy I’m VERY impressed.

P.s. #NoFilter xo

#GETTHELOOK- FISHNET DEETS

I am LOVING this trend of wearing fishnet tights under ripped jeans etc, yessssss kimmy k thank you for this inspo! I bought mine for £8 from Topshop but they’re just going in and out of stock, like why not just try get them from a sex shop instead?

I wore mine under ripped mom jeans from Topshop, the rips over time have exaggerated from wear which I kind of prefer cause they look more like a natural tear. I paired them with my & Other Stories boots so you could see the fishnet detail not only on the knee but on my ankles also.

I then wore them with my unripped mom jeans, but paired with a crop top so you could see the top of the tights and waistband, totally kimmy k style. I wore stan smiths just to keep it casual 🙋🏼 how do you wear yours?

#GETTHELOOK – A GLAM LIBRARY DAY

I’m ill and exhausted from working Black Friday weekend at work, I usually don’t bother wearing make up for uni but I looked rough so needed a pick me up. I went for a natural glam look which would keep me looking alive and hide how ill I felt.

img_7617
I’ve just got the iPhone 7 and seriously struggling to get used to how good the front camera is… it’s almost like ‘too good’. It shows all of my spots and open pores it’s gross! It’s deffo ruined my selfie game but managed to crack it today.

#GETTHELOOK – NO FILTER

I’d been going off 3-4 hours sleep for about 10 days because of my second year hand in at uni. I managed to spill a Starbucks over my MacBook and loose every piece of work 2 weeks before hand in. My amazing dad sent me his laptop to use to get shit done and the night before hand in that also decided to cave in. Majorly like WTF how I managed to break 2 MacBooks in a month I don’t know. But learning from my mistakes the first time, I’d saved all my work on a USB so I didn’t loose a thing! Lesson learnt, ALWAYS back up your work. It may seem like effort but it’s so worth doing.

Anyway so I’d had 3 hours sleep and had to hand in my work at uni first thing in the morning and then go off to work til 10.30pm yay me. I was EXHAUSTED. My bags under my eyes were on a whole new level I was literally living off coffee. Tbh can’t complain cause anyone who goes to uni will understand.

ANYWAY- FACE DEETS

EYES: theBalm Voyage palette, I used the soft browns in this pallete and stared lightly and blended them up. I then used the copper shade from the Sleek idivine palette on my lid. Finished with Maybelline mascara and Topshop gel eyeliner.

BROWS: OBVI my fave Topshop brow gel in Form and Cresent Moon highlighter under the brow.

FACE: Too Faced Born This Way foundation. TO COVER UP THE DARK CIRCLES UNDER MY EYE I used LA Girl Pro concealer in the red shade. Now you literally need the tiniest amount to do this. Just pop it under your eye and blend out with your finger. I then used LA Girl Pro Concealer in my normal shade over the top to eliminate the redness. Make Up Forever HD transulecent powder on face and under eyes. Topshop Bronzer in Mohawk, NYX contour palette, Zoeva blush, Topshop Cresent Moon Highlighter mixed with theBalm Mary Loumanizer.

LIPS: Topshop lip contour in outline and NYX soft matte in London.

Then all set with LA Girl Pro matte finish setting spray!

#GETTHELOOK – 7AM GET UP

Early start, early finish. The 7am shift is my fave cause you open up and get shit done then before you know it your finished and you still have the rest of your day. But it’s tidieous when it comes to make up, cause you want something quick and easy to do but you don’t want to look like you’ve just rolled out of bed and arrived at work. Plus, if you’ve got plans after work then you need a look which can do both….. Although nobody probably thinks about make up in this much detail, just me? Okay cool.

FACE: I went for a subtle contour and more of a highlight as I wanted to brighten up my face. I’d fake tanned the night before (I used Bondi Sands) so my face was quite bronzed. I used my usual Sephora foundation (although I really need to find a new foundation as this is running out, any suggestions?), Sephora creamy concealer and Make Up Forever HD translucent powder to set everything in place. Then I used Topshop Bronzer in Mohawk and the NYX contour palette to give a light contour. I went HARD with highlight, I used the Topshop Glow Pot in Polished, and both Topshop Highlighters in Sunbeam and Crescent Moon. Love a glow. I used them above my cheekbones, on my nose and on my Cupid’s bow.

EYES: I used The Balm Voyage palette in shades Bienvenue, Tervetuloa and a little bit of Valkommen to do a light warm brown smokey eye. I then used Topshop gel liner to do some eyeliner flicks. Im so bad at eyeliner I have to use sticky tape to line my eyes so my ticks are even!  For my brows I used my ultimate fave Topshop brow gel in Form.

LIPS: I used both Topshop Lip Contours to do my lips, I used Frame to out line my lips and Outline in the centre to do a nude matte ombré. I dust a bit of contour powder under my bottom lip, I learnt this trick on Kylie Jenners app and it really makes so much difference! Also works really well with these lip liners.

HAIR: I got me some extensions, blog post to follow! I styled my hair with Balmain sea salt spray to create a beachy texture.

So overall, my face is pretty much Topshop! I do fully recommend all the products mentioned. The Balm palette I bagged in TK Maxx for £8, RRP £37.50!!

#GETTHELOOK – WERK 2 BRUNCH

Having worked in retail for nearly 4 years now, getting called into a last min shift is nothing new. I don’t mind though, help the team out n all that. This Sunday I was called in for a 7am start (fresh) and I had plans for brunch after. I needed a glam look which wouldn’t take long in the morning but actually looked like I’d made effort. Whenever I’m tired, I avoid heavy eye make up and it just emphasises and draws attention to my sleepy eyes. Plus, I always go by either doing bold eyes or a bold lip, don’t do both.

Face: I mixed MAC Strobe Cream with my Sephora foundation to give my face a glow to eliminate fatigue. Then went in with Topshop Bronzer, NYX Contour Palette and Becca Highlighter.

Eyes: I used a fluffy blending brush to dust shades from the NYX Contour Palette over my eye to lightly contour the eye. Touched up with Maybelline Mascara and Brow Gel on the brows.

Lips: Dark lipsticks suit me much more now that I’ve died my hair back brown. I used a Topshop Lip Liner and Matte Lip Bullet. A great dupe of Diva from MAC.

Hair: I curled my hair the night before with a wand and then when I woke up the next day the curls had dropped out into a beachy look, I restyled it slightly in the morning with sea salt spray.

Outfit: I literally just went for my black Jamie jeans, Topshop Boutique grey vest and a leather jacket. Finished the look with my Saint Laurent scarf, you can get a Topshop dupe here.

For brunch I went to Bills on Wellington Street. V nice but Breakfast Club will always be my fave.

#GETTHELOOK – GLITTER AF

I was off to a flat party in a casual outfit so needed my make up to dress me up a bit! I’d had a shit day and kept telling myself ‘don’t let anyone ruin your sparkle’ (cringe, yes) and decided to interpret that into my make up for the night!

I did my smokey eye as usual using all MAC eyeshadowsMalt, Embark, Expensive Pink, All That Glitters and Antiqued. I used theBalm Mary Lou Manizer highlight on the inner corner and underneath the brow as I wanted my inner corner to be really highlighted. I finished the eyes with Eylure false lashes in 117 and used a teeny bit of Maybelline gel eyeliner.

I don’t always wear eyeliner and false lashes but I recommend doing so with glitter as you really want your eyes to be a focal point and not look like the glitter is taking over your eye.

IMG_0741.jpg

For the glitter I used a Topshop glitter pot (currently no longer available) and Glitter Lips in Midas Kiss from BeautyMart in Topshop Oxford Circus. The Glitter Lips comes with a skin friendly adhesive and wand to apply the glitter. I placed the adhesive gently around the inner corner of my eye and packed on the glitter with the wand. With my finger, I dabbed on the Topshop glitter on the inner corner and further down around the eye to blend it out. Always start with a little and build up the glitter!
