#TRIED’N’TESTED – HUDA BEAUTY ROSE GOLD PALETTE

I managed to bag this on Cult Beauty as I’d signed up for email updates as to when this would be in stock. I imagined it would be out of stock by the time I got onto the website but it was still there! The palette was £56 which was a lot more than I thought it would be and I don’t know how I feel about it. But I kept looking at the glitter shades and was like look I’ll just buy it. As it was my first time ordering from Cult Beauty I was really impressed with the delivery time, it arrived the day after next in perfect packaging!

Processed with VSCO with hb1 preset
I personally don’t like the packaging of this palette, it’s cheap for the price you pay. It arrives with a cardboard sleeve and then the palette is also made from cardboard within a plastic transparent lid, similar to a Z Palette. For £56 I was definitely expecting more, like think about how the Naked palettes and Anastasia Modern Renaissance palette are packaged. That was my vision. Plus once you have to keep opening and sliding on the sleeve, the corners of the palette just get scuffed.

So as I was a bit miffed at the packaging I wasn’t that excited for the shadows. They’re all talc free so there shouldn’t be much kick back and I was intrigued to see how they would blend. See below for my swatches, I didn’t add filters just so you can see the true colour.

The glitter was what I was most excited for, and you’re supposed to only apply these with your fingers. You can obvi use a brush if you want to but Huda suggested that the formula works better with fingers. The idea being you press firmly on the shade and then swipe on your lid and it glides on like a dream full of pigment. I prefer using my fingers sometimes for glitter lids but I also like spraying my brush with a bit of Fix+. Anyway I just couldn’t seem to get the glitters to swatch on my hand like I wanted them to! They seem quite flakey and you have to press down a couple of times to get the flakes to blend. A fantastic dupe of these shadows would be the Topshop singles, for £7-£9.50 they’re very similar.

(Left, with flash. Right, without flash)

When I went to use this on my eyes I realised that this wasn’t an everyday palette, definitely more for occasions and going out. The shadows perform so much better on the eyes than in the swatches. They blend like and absolute dream. In the red toned colours there’s some kick back but I know that the formula on red shades is particularly difficult to make without kickback. The glitters work with a finger but I still went in with a brush to tidy it up, I also did my classic fix+ technique and that also works. I did have to press down firmly more than once to build up the desired amount of glitter on my lid.

Overall is this with it? I’m unsure, the price is so damn expensive and the matte shades are similar to other palettes. The shimmers could pass for Morphe shimmers once they’re on the lid. Plus I feel like you can only create a certain amount of looks with this palette, unlike a Morphe or Anastasia Beverly Hills where you can go for days. After this, I bought the Violet Voss palette Holy Grail and I’ve been reaching for that more often. It’s cute but the packaging really devalues it.

#TRIED’N’TESTED – STYLIST LIVE

Processed with VSCO with hb1 presetAs I’m a member of the Stylist Beauty Council I very kindly got 2 tickets to Stylist Live! This was my second year going as I also went last year.

Processed with VSCO with hb1 preset

So the concept of the day is that you book yourself onto 1 workshop, 1 talk and 1 catwalk show. By the time I got round to doing this the workshops I wanted were fully booked so I just decided to do a talk and the catwalk show. As I went the year before I had a rough idea about what the catwalk would be like. I booked myself onto a trend forecasting talk as my current unit at uni is based on forecasting. One of the guest speakers was from WGSN (major global forecasting site) which was really interesting. I learnt a lot from the talk but some of it was what I learn at uni, plus the audience could do a Q&A at the end which I enjoyed as it broadened the topic.

The catwalk is built up of 5 trends for A/W all of which are high street looks you can buy now. In my personal opinion, it’s just naff. I’d much rather a edit which you can actually shop at the event built up of some personal shoppers and stylists to help you find the look which is best for you. However the main thing which I disliked about the catwalk show, was that in the trend talk the fashion editor talked about tailoring everything for the Stylist reader. Now, this should of been filtered onto the catwalk show. The Stylist reader isn’t all a size 6 tall skinny early 20’s female. It would be much more exciting if we had a range of body sizes up on the catwalk to reflect the range of readers. You can say the same for all fashion shows I know, but Stylist is that magazine you get for free on the tube to read in on your commute and really reaches out to the reader.

In between all of this, the business design centre is built up of pop up stalls. Clarins and Urban Decay having the biggest floor space. I wanted to see more exclusive discounts. Liz Earle only had 10% off which was a bit disappointing, you can get better on Feel Unique! It needs to be a lot more hands on, a lot of the brands are small businesses trying to sell product to you which kinda got annoying. I want to be able to learn about these new brands and get an experience. For example, Urban Decay was just like going into Debenhams… where as at an event like this they should be doing master classes, prize giveaways, discounts etc. Like really open up to the customer and promote themselves. This is something that Clarins did well, they had makeovers, back massages, neck massages and hand massages going on. Plus there should be a lot of variety of brands, I saw too many Pinterest inspired greetings cards, old news.

This is a really fun day out or something to do post work, it doesn’t last the whole day, only about 3 hours I’d say? So if you travel from outside London it’s nice to go and get food and cocktails afterwards and really make a day of it I’d day.

Processed with VSCO with hb1 preset

So my overall opinion is, great girly day and something different to do. It needs to be less money making orientated and more hands on and part of an experience. Plus add some body shapes to that catwalk! Look at what the Tommy Hilfiger, Burberry and Topshop Unique are doing and have the catwalk edit ready to shop afterwards.

#HAUL – PAYDAY PURCHASES

I did a big Beauty Bay order when I got paid and it was the best order I’ve ever place. I also bought some bits from Beauty Mart and believe it or not, Amazon too.

Let’s start with the Makeup Geek shadows as I just don’t understand why it took me so long to try Makeup Geek?! These shadows are just tooooo good I can’t get over how good they are. I bought Beaches & Cream, Peach Smoothie, Coco Bear, Frappe, Peach Melba, Cherry Cola and 2 foiled ones which I can’t remember but you can see on the photo. I bought a Morphe palette to pop them in just cause I preferred this to the Z Palettes. The shadows are just so pigmented its crazy, if these were £15 a piece I would still fully justify buying them. The foiled ones are incredible. I usually spray Mac Fix+ onto my brush first but for these you don’t even need to do that. I’m 100% buying more next payday.

Bought from Beauty Bay here

Okay so I bought another morphe palette, I probably didn’t need it but I did. I really think everyone should own at least one morphe palette as there such amazing value. I went for the 35K as I needed a really smokey palette and this was a perf alternative to the Urban Decay Naked Smokey palette. Once again the pigment just exceeds itself and the foiled shadows are in a league of their own. The empty palette is also perfect for pan eyeshadows, my Makeup Geek shadows fit in perfectly.

Bought from Beauty Bay here and the empty palette here.

Milani blush was next on my list as I saw these in a Jaclyn Hill video waaaay back. I couldn’t decide what shade to do so I went for romantic rose as it was vegan even though I’m not vegan lol. I was just curious to see how vegan make up was as I’ve never used it knowingly! Such a gorgeous everyday blush which goes on well, I think I’m going to buy more of these as you get so much product for your money.

Bought from Beauty Bay here.

I added a Gerad Cosmetics lippy to my basket and I’m unsure why, I think I was just going CRAY cause it’s cheap and I thought I was Jaclyn Hill. It’s nice but nothing major.

Bought from Beauty Bay here.

I HAD to try the EX1 foundation as people are going so mad for it I wanted to see what the fuss was about. I bought it in shades 100 and 300 as I tan a lot so needed to vary and mix up my shade when needed. However I wish I got 200 and 100 as 300 is actually really dark, well darker than I expected. EX1 is based around olive skin tones and the Arab women love it. But it just really reminds me of MAC Studio Fix Fluid, but for half the price. It has good days and bad days, if you know then you know. The texture is pretty similar too. I’ll still reach for it on my days off work but I do think the Too Faced Born This Way has my heart.

Bought from BeautyMart here.

I’m starting to get into the Korean skincare hype. BeautyMart were selling the TONY MOLY face masks and I was just intrigued by the randomness of the ingredients, like red wine face mask???? But for £6 a shot I was like nah. I found them on amazon, yes Amazon, for £11 for 11 masks (basically the whole set). So I popped them in my basket. I haven’t tried all of them yet but I don’t think I like them more than the Sephora ones. The pore control broke me out into really bad acne again, which some things do then it clears up but a week later and the spots aren’t shifting. However he radiance ones are nice. Cute for a pamper night.

#FAVES – JUNE & JULY

I didn’t do a favourites for June just because there wasn’t really anything I was truly like WOW about. So thought I’d do a combined one instead!

SLEEK I DIVINE PALETTE

Okay, I don’t actually mean the whole palette, there’s just this one shade which is absolute holy grail! The bottom right cooper shade is just absolutely to die for. All the other shades are good but this one is in a league of its own. This month I’ve loved copper shades because they really bring out the blue in my eyes. I just use my favourite base colour MAC – Malt, and a few of my usual shades from theBalm Voyage pallete and then pat this copper shade onto my kid with my finger. It’s so beaut.

Bought from Boots here.

KYLIE COSMETICS METAL MATTE

I bought this in the shade Reign and I mean despite the fact it arrived less than half empty (see Instagram) it’s actually the coolest colour. Whenever I wear this I get so many compliments. Obviously it doesn’t last as long as her liquid mattes do, but it really does stay on well. The only negative, also besides it arriving empty, is that the applicator is awful and makes it harder for you to apply smoothly on your lip. But the colour is banging. I know that NYX have really good metallic dupes so I’m going to give those a try instead of purchasing more of the Kylie metals as they’re so god damn expensive.

Bought from Kylie Cosmetics here.

MAC MINERIZLE POWDER

I used to use this when I was a die hard MAC gurl and then when off it when I started using other brands. But I was sorting out my make up and forgot I had it so started using it again and forgot how amazing it was as an everyday powder. During this absolute mega heatwave it really has helped keep my make up on and covered up my blemishes. I use this in shade Medium.

Bought from MAC here.

GERAD COSMETICS LIPGLOSS

Another one I forgot about! Jaclyn Hill used to rave about these when she started doing YouTube and I bought them but wasn’t really a gloss kinda gal at the time. Since trying the Kylie Cosmetics ones and just not really feeling it I decided to give these a go and really forgot how good they were! I can use them without any colour underneath cause the pigment is great, and they really have a nice shine to them. However, they are sticky so watch your hair.

#TRIED’N’TESTED – NYX MATTE LIP CREAM

After trying purchasing the Kylie Jenner Lip Kit I thought I’d try these NYX matte lip creams to compare as they’re only £5.

I ordered 2 shades, Athens and Stockholm. Athens from ASOS and Stockholm from Feel Unique. Being honest though, I don’t think I’m going to bother buying make up from ASOS again. A friend of mine purchased a NYX Mascara and it arrived all dried up as if it had been opened. It wasn’t until my lip cream from Feel Unique arrived did I realise how dried up my ASOS lip cream was. I don’t know if it’s cause it’s old stock they want rid of or what? Weird.

In the pictures the shades looked slightly different but when they arrived I realised how similar they were! Athens has more of a peachy under tone to it than Stockholm. They can be blended with so many different nude lip liners and brands to create a block colour or ombré effect on the lip.

On the lips they feel creamy and slightly moisturising. I always apply my NYX Lip Primer underneath to create a base and keep the product on longer. The pigment isn’t as good as the Kylie Lip Kit, if you apply a second layer you get slight streaks on your lips. But what I love about these is that they’re the perfect affordable everyday lippy. They do have a soft creamy texture which feels lightweight on the lips and doesn’t dry your lips out at all.

(Left ATHENS right STOCKHOLM)

Since writing this I’ve purchased more, London and Abu Dhabi (both nudes) and Copenhagen (deep burgundy colour). London is my absolute favourite and I think it might be my perfect go to nude! Copenhagen is nice but it really doesn’t suit my skin tone, it would look beaut on a darker skin tone.

These are cheap and cheerful and an absolute bargain! Perfect to keep in your handbag of desk at work for a pop of colour on your lips.

#GETTHELOOK – NO FILTER

I’d been going off 3-4 hours sleep for about 10 days because of my second year hand in at uni. I managed to spill a Starbucks over my MacBook and loose every piece of work 2 weeks before hand in. My amazing dad sent me his laptop to use to get shit done and the night before hand in that also decided to cave in. Majorly like WTF how I managed to break 2 MacBooks in a month I don’t know. But learning from my mistakes the first time, I’d saved all my work on a USB so I didn’t loose a thing! Lesson learnt, ALWAYS back up your work. It may seem like effort but it’s so worth doing.

Anyway so I’d had 3 hours sleep and had to hand in my work at uni first thing in the morning and then go off to work til 10.30pm yay me. I was EXHAUSTED. My bags under my eyes were on a whole new level I was literally living off coffee. Tbh can’t complain cause anyone who goes to uni will understand.

ANYWAY- FACE DEETS

EYES: theBalm Voyage palette, I used the soft browns in this pallete and stared lightly and blended them up. I then used the copper shade from the Sleek idivine palette on my lid. Finished with Maybelline mascara and Topshop gel eyeliner.

BROWS: OBVI my fave Topshop brow gel in Form and Cresent Moon highlighter under the brow.

FACE: Too Faced Born This Way foundation. TO COVER UP THE DARK CIRCLES UNDER MY EYE I used LA Girl Pro concealer in the red shade. Now you literally need the tiniest amount to do this. Just pop it under your eye and blend out with your finger. I then used LA Girl Pro Concealer in my normal shade over the top to eliminate the redness. Make Up Forever HD transulecent powder on face and under eyes. Topshop Bronzer in Mohawk, NYX contour palette, Zoeva blush, Topshop Cresent Moon Highlighter mixed with theBalm Mary Loumanizer.

LIPS: Topshop lip contour in outline and NYX soft matte in London.

Then all set with LA Girl Pro matte finish setting spray!

#FULLYRATE – HAIR REHAB LONDON

#BeckyWithTheGoodHair

So when I died my hair from blonde to brown, I thought that I’d get some hair extensions because before I started dying my hair it used to be really long and brown, and I miss it. Lesson being, don’t buy box dyes when you’re 15. I’d used clip in extensions before and thought I’d up my game and get some bonds or something but being realistic, in London can afford that? Absolutely not. Clip ins it was. But to be fair, I thought may aswell start with clip ins and take it from there.

CHOOSING THE BRAND

I didn’t want clip in extensions that would look like rats tails after a month so I researched into many different brands. I chose Hair Rehab London because I was stalking Lauren Pope’s (the founder of the brand and TOWIE star) Instagram and I didn’t even realise that her hair was all extensions and sometimes clip ins, they look INCRED. So I looked on the Hair Rehab website and made sure they were real hair and how good the quality was etc. They have a really strong FAQ section which lit answered my questions which is so good if you’re a first time buyer (I’m making this sound like you’re buying a house). They’ve also got a mix of synthetic and real hair, for mine I wanted real.

CHOOSING THE COLOUR

Buying extensions online was tricky because I wanted the get the right colour match, but Hair Rehab had an amazing colour match tool where you simply just upload a photo of your hair and you guide the colour swatches next to it to find your shade. If you get stuck on that, you can email them a few selfies of your hair and they can match you up for you.

So I went for 16″ extensions, but they were out of stock so the customer service team emailed me straight away the next morning asking if I wanted to wait until they were back in stock or if I wanted 20″ at no extra cost. If you’ve read my last post then you’ll know how analytical I am about customer service. I decided to go for the 20″ because I was going to get them cut anyway.

(My hair before my extensions)

WHEN THEY ARRIVED

When they arrived the colour was absolutely spot on, I received 4x one clip strips, 1x 2 clip strips and 2x 3 clip strips. This is the perfect amount of not more for my hair. If you have really really thick hair then you may want to order 2 packs. However they were waaaaayyy too long. 20″ is longer than I thought. Luckily my BFF is a hairdresser so I took them to her and she cut them into my hair for me and shaped them etc. I fully recommend that you do this with extensions as it makes them look way more natural. I got quite a lot cut off them, we just did it inch by inch until we found the perfect length.

STYLING

When they were cut into my hair they were obviously straight, and they looked so realistic it was CRAY. They added nice healthy thickness and length which was just what I wanted. When wearing them straight, I usually straighten my hair and extensions separately and then place the extensions in my hair and briefly run through them with straightners to smooth out the ends.

They look so good when curled. I place them into my hair first and curl my hair and extensions together. I just feel like they look more natural this way because the curls form together more. Although it’s completely up to you and you can curl your hair separately and then place the pieces in. I just use my curling wand to curl them. Sometimes if I’ve just washed my hair and it’s that annoying smooth texture where it lit won’t do anything, I just spray my roots with dry shampoo to add texture giving the clips something to grip on to.

I don’t wear my extensions everyday, only about 2-3 times a week. Therefore I wash them about every 2 weeks or whenever I feel like they need washing. I use my usual shampoo and I only condition the ends, however I do use a conditioning treatment on the ends which I just leave in. Never blow dry them! Leave them to dry au naturale. If anyone’s got any tips on maintaining  and treating extensions, let me know!

#FAVES – MAY

I love it when it’s a new month purely because it means I get to do a favourites post!

TOO FACED BORN THIS WAY FOUNDATION

This foundation, oh my days. I think it’s the best I’ve ever used. On payday I was torn between this and Georgio Armani silk foundation but went for this as it was cheaper. When I tested it I was sceptical because it had the same texture as MAC Studio Fix, and that foundation scares me after having used it for so many years. It kind of baffles me because I only need 1 pump to cover my whole face, and then about half a pump extra for a fuller coverage, but it doesn’t feel thick at all. It really does make your skin look naturally flawless and I’ve got acne so it’s quite hard for my skin to look flawless. Majorly rate this guys!

TOPSHOP GLOW POT IN POLISHED

It’s back in stock and better than ever. I LOVE the Topshop glow pot, it’s the best cream highlight I’ve used. So over my foundation I dap a small amount with my fingers across the top of my cheekbones, bridge of my nose and cuspids bow. I start of with a small amount and use my fingers to blend it out and then build it up. I find that it works best with fingers I don’t know why, I’ve used brushes and sponges but it maintains a beaut glow when blended with fingers. I then use a powdered highlight on the top cause I LOVE highlight.

SPECTRUM BRUSHES

After receiving the amazing beauty blender style sponge in my Birchbox last month, I decided to purchase some Spectrum brushes. I didn’t realise that they’re pink and so pretty!! The fact they’re pink made me want to buy more tbh, but I just settled for a fan brush and a shader brush because I actually needed one. They’re so fab! The fan brush makes highlight go on so well I love it and the shader brush I use for shadow under my eyes when doing a smokey eye and it blends the product out so well. I’m 100% going to purchase more of these, they’re so affordable too!

#TRIED’N’TESTED – KYLIE COSMETICS LIP GLOSSES

Kylie Jenner has our money, and she’s laughing her way to the bank.

Skip this if you’re a die hard Kylie Jenner fan or don’t care about the background story to these glosses.

SO, I actually ordered these way back in April when they were first released, I ordered 1x Literally and 2x So Cute. I only meant to get 1 So Cute but I accidentally managed to add another into my basket somehow. I don’t actually know where to start with this because everything seemed to go wrong. 2-ish weeks passed and my Lip Kit which I ordered after this, arrived before my glosses. I got a notification from Royal Mail saying that I had to pay customs on my order, can I just note that on the delivery tracker that Kylie Cosmetics give you, they mark your order as delivered when it’s not, so I had no idea where my order was for 2-3 days until I got a card through my letterbox from Royal Mail. You can’t get in contact with USPS (the shipping service) because it’s American and you need to fill out details before sending an email, tragic. After an hour of frantic googling, I learnt that orders got delivered by Royal Mail or Parcel Force when they enter the UK. So anyway, my customs charge was about £14, which I thought fair enough I’m ordering from America it was bound to happen.

My order arrived in the usual box, but only one lipgloss was there. I had a receipt enclosed for all 3 lip glosses and the sticker on the box stated that 3 items were inside. I’ve never been so frustrated that I’d paid for 3 lip glosses and £14 customs for one lip gloss. By the time this happened, Jeffree Star had Snapchatted his faulty lip glosses which he received from Kylie Cosmetics and Kylie had responded saying that she had addressed the problem of the faulty wands and her new batch will be improved, and everyone who ordered the first time round will get sent replacements. Read more here. So I thought ‘OK maybe the other 2 were faulty and they’re coming later’. OH HELL NO. I opened up Literally, and the wand was fucked, it looked like a mini toilet scrubber it was awful. There was no way I could apply lipgloss with  it.

I emailed Kylie Cosmetics customer services to complain about my missing 2 lip glosses and the faulty brush. 2 days later I received an email asking for order number and details (even though I included this in my original email), just to then receive and automated response about the faulty brushes being replaced later that week. I don’t know if it’s because in England we’re overly polite and customer service is so important or because you’re and A-List celeb and you can get away with shit customer service. It was SO frustrating and they just kept ignoring the fact that they didn’t send my full order, eventually all I received was ‘your new order is on it’s way’. No apology, nothing. At least they could of marked my order as a ‘gift’ so that I would’t have to pay custom charges, but oh no I had to pay another £14, so nearly £30 was spent on customs for 3 lip glosses.

So today, over 2 months since I ordered my lip glosses I finally have them. They didn’t even arrive in the usual box, they were just wrapped in black bubble wrap. I opened up the bubble wrap and inside was the 3 glosses, shoved into their packaging looking as if someone had already opened them before me.

Processed with VSCO with hb1 preset

(Left – First batch, Right – Second batch)

Okay so now about the actual glosses

The brush had 100% been improved since, thank god.

So Cute is much lighter than I thought, the formula is incredibly thick and it does go on patchy so I’d recommend wearing a lip stick under neath and outlining your lips with a slightly darker lip liner.

Literally is actually a really nice colour even worn alone. The pigment is stronger than So Cute and it’s also incredibly thick.

Overall, focusing on the product and not the brand, these glosses aren’t any different from elsewhere. They’re only ‘special’ because they have the Kylie name to them. You’re honestly just better sticking to MAC or even NYX. With approx £30 paid in customs for 3 lip glosses it makes each gloss worth £20. For a gloss? It’s a no from me, sorry Kylie. Stick to your lip kits and please improve your customer service.

#GETTHELOOK – 7AM GET UP

Early start, early finish. The 7am shift is my fave cause you open up and get shit done then before you know it your finished and you still have the rest of your day. But it’s tidieous when it comes to make up, cause you want something quick and easy to do but you don’t want to look like you’ve just rolled out of bed and arrived at work. Plus, if you’ve got plans after work then you need a look which can do both….. Although nobody probably thinks about make up in this much detail, just me? Okay cool.

FACE: I went for a subtle contour and more of a highlight as I wanted to brighten up my face. I’d fake tanned the night before (I used Bondi Sands) so my face was quite bronzed. I used my usual Sephora foundation (although I really need to find a new foundation as this is running out, any suggestions?), Sephora creamy concealer and Make Up Forever HD translucent powder to set everything in place. Then I used Topshop Bronzer in Mohawk and the NYX contour palette to give a light contour. I went HARD with highlight, I used the Topshop Glow Pot in Polished, and both Topshop Highlighters in Sunbeam and Crescent Moon. Love a glow. I used them above my cheekbones, on my nose and on my Cupid’s bow.

EYES: I used The Balm Voyage palette in shades Bienvenue, Tervetuloa and a little bit of Valkommen to do a light warm brown smokey eye. I then used Topshop gel liner to do some eyeliner flicks. Im so bad at eyeliner I have to use sticky tape to line my eyes so my ticks are even!  For my brows I used my ultimate fave Topshop brow gel in Form.

LIPS: I used both Topshop Lip Contours to do my lips, I used Frame to out line my lips and Outline in the centre to do a nude matte ombré. I dust a bit of contour powder under my bottom lip, I learnt this trick on Kylie Jenners app and it really makes so much difference! Also works really well with these lip liners.

HAIR: I got me some extensions, blog post to follow! I styled my hair with Balmain sea salt spray to create a beachy texture.

So overall, my face is pretty much Topshop! I do fully recommend all the products mentioned. The Balm palette I bagged in TK Maxx for £8, RRP £37.50!!
